Commercial photography is different than most portrait or wedding photography. Commercial photography includes going into unusual, sometimes hostile environments, and taking photographs that need to communicate the client’s message or story. And there are times when the photographer isn’t there to capture the moment but to create it. He does this by using photographic lighting, specialized cameras and lenses, models, and various post-production methods to accomplish this goal.
Sometimes a commercial photographer will be asked to go into situations that require a mastery of photography technique that many retail photographers just don’t have. Wedding and retail portrait photographer may be great at what he does every day, but a commercial shooter usually does something different every day. That fact creates a very versatile photographer and that photographer is more likely to adapt to any given photographic assignment and come back with what the client needs to communicate his message. Michael has been asked to photograph in coal mines, in airplanes, at drilling sites, in operating rooms, in chemical plants and even in mushroom mines. It takes a special kind of photographer to come back with the goods, in all those different types of situations.
Another than that makes a commercial photographer stand apart from other photographers is the type of equipment that they need to have or at least need to have access to. Because they need to be so versatile, commercial photographers need to have more cameras, more lenses, more specialized lenses, and a TON more lighting equipment.
